MOSCOW — WNBA star Britney Greener’s pretrial detention in Russia has been extended by a month, lawyers said Friday.
Griner’s attorney, Alexander Boikov, told The Associated Press that he believes the relatively short extension of the detention period suggests the case will go to trial soon.
Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was detained at Moscow airport and could face up to 10 years in prison after an e-cigarette pod containing cannabis oil was allegedly found in her luggage.
The Biden administration says Greener, 31, was wrongfully detained. WNBA and U.S. officials have been working hard to get her released, with no apparent progress.
