WNBA star Brittney Griner sends letter to Joe Biden asking for her release

The White House received a letter Monday from American basketball star Britney Greener pleading with President Biden to fight for her release from a Russian prison, saying she feared she would never return home.

An excerpt from Ms. Greener’s letter to Mr. Biden, much of which remains confidential, was released by her representative and reported by The Associated Press.

“As I sit in a Russian prison, thinking alone, without the protection of a wife, family, friends, Olympic jersey, or any accomplishments, I’m terrified that I might be here forever,” said the WNBA star and two — Time Olympics The gold medalist wrote. “On July 4th, our family usually honors those who fought for our freedom, including my father, a Vietnam veteran. It pains me to think about how I usually celebrate the day, because freedom has been a big deal to me this year It means something completely different.”

Ms. Greener was arrested at Moscow airport in February on charges of possessing a cartridge containing cannabis oil.

She was detained during a diplomatically fragile period. The West is punishing Russia for unprovoked attacks on Ukraine, sparking fears that Ms Greener will be used as a political pawn in the tensions.

Ms Greener urged Biden, who recently secured the release of another American, Trevor Reed, from Russia to use his presidential powers to help her and other detainees.

“Please do what you can to bring us home. I voted for the first time in 2020 and I voted for you. I believe in you. My freedom still has many benefits and you can help restore it,” her letter said. “I miss my wife! I miss my family! I miss my teammates! It makes me angry to know they are suffering so much right now. I appreciate everything you can do at this moment to get me home.”

Ms Griner’s trial started recently and she could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted. Acquittals are reportedly rare in Russia and can be overturned at a later date, unlike in U.S. courts.
