ZURICH, May 27 (Reuters) – Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehamer said Russian President Vladimir Putin told him in a phone call on Friday that Moscow would honor its natural gas delivery commitments and was ready to work with Ukraine. Discuss the exchange of prisoners.
Nehamer made the comments to reporters after a 45-minute conference call between the two leaders.
Asked about what Putin told him about the gas delivery, Nehamer said: “He also raised the issue (and said) that all the delivery will be done in full.”
In a separate statement, the Kremlin said Russia reaffirmed its commitment to abide by its contractual obligations to supply natural gas to Austria, which derives 80 percent of its gas from Russia.
Nehamer, who visited Russia last month for talks with Putin, said the Russian leader had expressed a willingness to discuss a prisoner swap with Ukraine.
“Whether he is really ready to negotiate is a complex question,” he added. (Reporting by Michael Shields, Editing by Thomas Escrit and Andrew Heavens)
