United Nations, New York, December 2, 2021-Leaders from African businesses, civil society, governments, and the United Nations participated in the Joint African Business Forum on Thursday to promote responsible business practices and sustainability and challenge the continent’s The private sector is looking for opportunities to solve the dual crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic and the climate emergency.

The United Nations Global Compact and its local network, which sponsored a one-day virtual event, launched the 2021-2023 Africa Strategy, calling on African companies to achieve sustainable development goals before the 2030 Agenda and Africa’s 2063 Agenda.

“As the continent’s economy recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, there are key opportunities for energy transition, food system transformation, and the use of extractive industry wealth to achieve a green, sustainable and inclusive economy,” said Amina J. Mohammed, UN Deputy The secretary-general attended the event. “These opportunities are not only good for business, but they are also the investments we need to get back on track for a decade of action centered on the 2030 Agenda and 2063 Agenda.”

The President of Botswana HE Mokgweetsi Masisi also delivered a speech at the forum. He emphasized Botswana’s commitment to sustainability and resilience efforts.

“Let me reiterate Botswana’s firm belief in the ten principles of the United Nations Global Compact and its firm support for Africa’s strategy,” he said.

Participants discussed issues such as achieving net zero carbon emissions and preventing global temperature from rising to 1.5°C, and looked forward to the COP 27 scheduled to be held in Egypt two years later. African marketing leaders also talked about the leadership of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Sanda Ojiambo, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of the United Nations Global Compact, said that cooperation is essential. It connects small and medium-sized enterprises and large multinational companies with trade associations, financial institutions, governments, civil society and UN partners.

“By working with businesses, governments, regional authorities and the African Union, we can and must make Africa’s 2030 Agenda and 2063 Agenda a reality,” Ojiambo said.

Business leaders provided insights from their own experiences, citing experiences and strategies for sharing their sustainable and resilient practices, including Josephine Pieters, senior manager of social impact at the diamond mining giant De Beers Group, and Robert Okine, CEO of Bewsys , Jane Karuku, CEO of Ghana-based IT consulting firm and Nairobi-based East Africa Brewery.

The goals of the UN Global Compact Africa strategy include focusing on issues and plans that are most relevant to African companies. It aims to involve leading pan-African and national companies, to involve all companies in all regions and all sectors, and to use the influence of associations, supply chains and sources of capital.

Africa Strategy is establishing a regional center in Abuja, Nigeria, and will expand the number of Global Compact local networks across the African continent. With a population of 1.3 billion and a gross domestic product of US$3.5 trillion, Africa is the world’s largest growth market.
