WASHINGTON (Reuters)-Two Democratic senators on Wednesday called for two bills to be voted into law that would restrict the content displayed by children online and how big tech companies such as Google (NASDAQ:) YouTube and Facebook Use their data for advertising (Nasdaq:).

Senators Richard Blumenthal and Ed Markey, both Democrats, are calling for the passage of an update to the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) of 1998, which includes raising children who cannot collect data without the consent of the age of 12 Age to 15.

Blumenthal called for the adoption of these measures within a few months.

Legislators expressed concern about showing children and young people what they say sometimes encourages dangerous behavior, eating disorders, or other types of self-harm.

Markey is the author of the House of Representatives of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA).

Facebook and TikTok did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Google’s YouTube declined to comment.
