U.S. leads the world in supercomputing Top500 ranking most powerful system.Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Frontier systems running on AMD EPYC CPUs took first place from last year’s winner, the Japanese ARM A64X Fuyue system. The Frontier, powered by Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s (HPE) Cray EX platform, is also far and away a top-of-the-line machine. Meanwhile, Fugaku’s 442 petaflops was less than half that figure, which was still enough to keep it No. 1 for the first two years.
Frontier is also the most efficient supercomputer. Running at 52.23 gigaflops per watt, it beat Japan’s MN-3 system to top the Green500 list. “The fact that the fastest machine in the world is also the most energy-efficient is simply amazing,” ORNL laboratory director Thomas Zacharia said in a news release.
Other machines in the TOP10 include another HPE Cray EX system (151.9 petaflops) installed at EuroHPC in Finland, an IBM-built Summit system (148.8 petaflops) using 22-core Power (CPU and NVIDIA Tesla V100 GPU), and Lawrence Livermore’s Sierra , a smaller Summit-scale version reaching 94.6 Pflop/s.
