U.S. beats Georgetown for first time since 1982

WASHINGTON — Johnny O’Neal scored 16 points and Jeff Sprouse added 15 as the Americans beat Georgetown 74-70 on Wednesday for their first victory over the De La Hoyas since Dec. 15, 1982.

Trailing by as many as 16 in the first half, Georgetown led 40-30 at halftime. Elijah Stephens gave the Eagles their first lead with 11:06 left in the second half.

In an 8-0 run, Sprouse hit an open 3-pointer. The US team led 59-55, and the US team maintained the lead at the last 8 minutes and 33 seconds. Sprouse made all four free throws in the final 19 seconds to seal the score.

Jaxon Knotek added 14 points for the Eagles (3-2), who allowed 18 of their 35 turnovers in the game.

Primus Pierce led the Hoyas (3-3) with 15 points and six assists. Akok Akok had 14 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals for Georgetown.

Georgetown is playing without No. 2 scorer Brandon Murray.
