VIENNA (Reuters)-Thousands of people (many of whom are far-right supporters) protested the coronavirus restrictions in Vienna the day after the Austrian government announced the new lockdown measures and stated that vaccination will be mandatory next year.

Whistling, applauding, trumpeting and drumming, crowds poured into the Heroes’ Square in front of the Hofburg, the former imperial palace in the center of Vienna. Many protesters waved the flags of Austria and other countries and held slogans with slogans such as “no vaccination,” “enough,” or “downfall the fascist dictatorship.”

Approximately 66% of Austria’s population has been vaccinated against COVID-19, which is one of the countries with the lowest rates in Western Europe. Many Austrians are skeptical of vaccines, and the far-right Liberal Party (the third largest party in parliament) encourages this view.

Even after the lockdown on unvaccinated people this week, the number of daily infections still set a record. The government said on Friday that it will put Austria back into lockdown https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/austria-reimposes -full-From Monday, lockdown-makes-vaccination-compulsory-2021-11-19 and mandatory vaccination from February 1st.

On Saturday, the Liberal Party (FPO) had planned to demonstrate force in Vienna, when Friday’s statement ignited its base and prompted Liberal Party leader Herbert Kickl to respond by saying “As of today, Austria is a dictatorship. nation”.

Although Kickl was unable to attend due to COVID-19, thousands of people responded to the call from FPO and other key vaccine organizations to protest across the city.

“We do not approve of our government’s measures,” said a protester, a member of a group that wears tin foil on his head and a toilet brush in his hand. Like most protesters interviewed by the media, they declined to be named, despite the festive atmosphere.
