Vatican City (Reuters)-Pope Francis called for an end to violence against women in his New Year’s address on Saturday, calling it an insult to God.
The 85-year-old Francis celebrated Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica on the solemn day of the Virgin Mary in the Roman Catholic Church and the annual World Peace Day.
Francis appeared to be in good shape on Saturday, after he participated in an unexplainable event on New Year’s Eve, but did not host as expected at the last minute.
At the beginning of Saturday’s Mass, he walked through the central aisle of the cathedral, instead of Friday night, he came out from the side door near the altar and watched from the sidelines.
Francis suffers from sciatica, which causes pain in his legs, and sometimes sudden attacks prevent him from standing for long periods of time.
Francis weaves his New Year sermon around the themes of motherhood and femininity-saying they connect the threads of life together-and uses it to make one of his strongest appeals to date, namely to end violence against them behavior.
Francis said: “Since mothers give life and women safeguard the world (together), let us all make greater efforts to promote mothers and protect women.”
“How much violence is against women! Enough! To hurt a woman is to insult God, and God takes our humanity from a woman.”
In an Italian TV show last month, Francis told a woman who had been beaten by his ex-husband that the man who abused the woman was “almost Satan.”
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic nearly two years ago, Francis has publicly opposed domestic violence on many occasions. Since the lockdown has put many women and abusers in trouble, domestic violence has increased in many countries.
Due to the restrictions of COVID, the public participation of the masses is lower than in the past few years. Italy surrounding the Vatican City reported https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/italy-reports-record-144243-coronavirus-cases-155-deaths-2021-12-31 a record of 144,243 coronavirus-related cases Cases have implemented new measures on Friday and recently, such as the obligation to wear masks outdoors.
In his speech on World Peace Day last month, Francis stated that countries should spend military expenditures on education investment and condemned the ever-increasing military costs at the expense of social services.
The annual peace message will be sent to heads of state and international organizations, and the pope will provide a signed copy of the leaders who will make an official visit to the Vatican in the coming year.
