Rome (Associated Press)-The famous green-eyed “Afghan girl” from National Geographic has arrived Italy As part of the West’s evacuation of Afghans Taliban The Italian government said Thursday that it will take over the country.
Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s office stated Italy After she asked for help to leave the country, she organized the evacuation of Sharbat Gulla.The Italian government will now help her integrate into life Italy, The statement said.
Gulla gained international fame as an Afghan refugee girl in 1984. Previously, a green-eyed photo of her by war photographer Steve McCurry appeared on the cover of National Geographic magazine. McCurry found her again in 2002.
In 2014, she surfaced in Pakistan, but when the authorities accused her of purchasing a forged Pakistani ID and ordered her to be deported, she went into hiding. She flew to Kabul, where the President hosted a reception for her at the Presidential Palace and gave her the keys to her new apartment.
