The red SUV drove through the Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin, and hit more than 20 people.
According to the police, a sports utility vehicle rushed past a Christmas parade in Wisconsin, USA, hitting more than 20 people, including children, and causing “some deaths.”
The incident occurred on Sunday at 4:39 pm (22:39 GMT) in Waukesha, about 32 kilometers (20 miles) west of Milwaukee.
Waukesha police chief Dan Thompson said a related person has been detained and the suspected vehicle has been recovered.
The police stated that the asylum-in-place order had been cancelled.
“A red SUV drove into our Christmas parade in the city center. More than 20 people were injured in the incident,” Thompson told reporters.
When asked about the death toll, Thompson said: “I don’t have an exact figure at this time.”
He added that it is not yet clear whether the incident is related to terrorism.
A video posted on the Internet showed a red SUV running rampant in the parade, seeming to run over a dozen people.
In the second video, when the car drove over a street obstacle, the police appeared to fire on it.
The local CBS affiliate later showed a photo on Twitter, which appeared to be a red SUV with a crumpled hood and a hung front fender, parked in the driveway.
A woman told the Fox6 TV station in Milwaukee that the SUV had attacked a female dance team between the ages of 9 and 15. According to Fox6, she said the immediate response was silence, followed by screaming, running, and checking the injured person.
Corey Montejo, a member of the Waukesha School District Board, told the Milwaukee Sentinel that his daughter’s dance team was hit by an SUV.
“They are pompoms and shoes, hot chocolate everywhere. I had to walk from one crumpled body to another to find my daughter,” he said. “My wife and two daughters were almost shot. Please pray for everyone. Please pray.”
According to WISN-TV in Milwaukee, affiliated to the American Broadcasting Corporation, an eyewitness said that the driver hit the “dancing grandma” and at least one person overturned the hood of the SUV.
The TV station said that another eyewitness estimated that the speed of the SUV when it crashed into a crowd was about 64 kilometers per hour (40 miles per hour).
Photos and videos circulated by Waukesha on Twitter show that after the incident, police cars and ambulances crowded the streets decorated with Christmas lights. At dusk, crowds of people crowded the sidewalk.
Thompson said that some of the wounded were taken to hospital by ambulance, others were taken to hospital by police, and many more were taken to hospital by family and friends.
“When we walked back between the buildings… we saw an SUV coming across, just stepped on the pedals on the metal, and zoomed in at full speed along the parade route. Then we heard a loud noise, only being hit by a vehicle The people in the country made deafening cries and screams,” City Councilman Angelito Tenorio near West Ellis told the Milwaukee Sentinel.
The newspaper said that the police ran into the street and told the parade observers to take shelter in the store.
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers said that he and his wife Casey “pray tonight for Waukesha and all the children, families and community members affected by this stupid behavior.”
