Performers will now compete for Artist of the Year or International Artist of the Year at the next annual awards ceremony to be held on February 8, 2022.
“It is important that BRITs continue to grow and are committed to being as inclusive as possible,” said Tom March, the new British chairman and co-president of Polydor Records, in a statement.
“It feels completely time to celebrate the achievements of the music created by artists and the work they have done, regardless of gender.”
The British followed in the footsteps of other awards ceremonies or events that abolished gender classification.
In September, the San Sebastian Film Festival awarded joint winners Jessica Chastain and Flora Ophelia Hoffman Lindal the first ever gender-neutral performance award. Recognize the best actor.
Next year’s British, the 42nd awards ceremony, will also expand the nominations to feature artists in the coveted annual song category. So far, only the lead artist or designated collaborator can be confirmed as the nominee for the award.
Four new genre awards will also be introduced to showcase a range of musical styles: alternative/rock performance, hip-hop/grime/rap performance, dance performance and pop/R’n’B performance. All four people will be elected by public voting.
British comedian Mo Jiligen will host the show, and the art team Block9 will assist in the design.
“British Music Awards is not only a celebration of British music, but also a reflection of British culture,” said Jeff Taylor, CEO of the British Recording Industry and the British Music Awards.
“The changes we make for the 2022 show should mean that our outstanding artists have more new fans, more participation, and a larger global platform than ever before.”
