The British Music Awards canceled separate male and female award categories

London (Associated Press)-The organizers of the British Music Awards announced on Monday that they will abolish separate male and female artist categories in a reorganization in order to make music awards more inclusive.

Next year’s awards will present trophies for British and International Artists of the Year, replacing the male and female awards in each category. Organizers stated that this change will “celebrate artists only for their music and work, not how they choose to recognize them or how others perceive them”.

The 2022 awards ceremony will also include four different types of new awards, determined by public vote: alternative/rock performance; hip-hop/dirt/rap performance; dance performance and pop/R’n’B performance.

These measures are the latest changes in response to long-standing criticism that has failed to reflect the diversity of British music. In 2017, the academy of more than 1,000 music industry professionals who selected British winners expanded in an attempt to make it more gender-balanced and diverse.

The 2022 Brit Awards Ceremony will be held on February 8 London‘s O2 Arena, hosted by comedian Mo Jiligen.
