MOSCOW (Reuters)-Russia’s Interfax news agency reported on Wednesday that Russian fighter jets and ships practiced repelling air strikes on naval bases during military exercises in the Black Sea and responded with air strikes because neighboring Ukraine also held combat exercises.

The exercise was held at a time when the situation in Ukraine was highly tense. Ukrainian and US officials expressed concern that Russia might launch an attack on its southern neighbors. The Kremlin believed that this statement was wrong.

Interfax News Agency quoted the Russian Black Sea Fleet as saying: “About 10 crew members and ships of the Novorossiysk Naval Base of the Black Sea Fleet… participated in this combat training event.”

It said that the Sukhoi fighter is one of the aircraft that exercises how to respond to enemy air strikes and cooperates with the Black Sea Fleet to conduct training flights in the Black Sea waters.

The Russian Black Sea Fleet is stationed in Crimea, and Moscow annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. Kiev hopes Russia will return it.

Ukraine accused Russia of gathering troops nearby and said Belarus could send migrants to its border. Ukraine launched an operation to strengthen the border on Wednesday, including military exercises for anti-tank and airborne forces.
