Popular messaging platform Telegram has announced that it will launch a new premium service as it seeks to monetize parts of its user base. Pavel Durov, the company’s chief executive, said the new tier, which has more than 700 million monthly active users, meets those users’ needs for more bandwidth and storage capacity.
Telegram’s new premium tier expands user capabilities
Telegram is one of the most popular messaging apps in the cryptosphere, with Announce It will introduce a paid premium tier of its service, allowing its users to access new features and expand some already available. The move comes as the company seeks to monetize much of its user base, which recently reached the milestone of 700 million monthly active users.
CEO Pavel Durov said the premium tier is the answer to the needs of a group of users looking to upgrade bandwidth and storage from within the application. He says:
After some thought, we realized that the only way to get more of our most demanding fans while keeping our existing features free is to make these raised limits a paid option.
New features available to paid users include expanding the number of channels they can follow — up to 1,000 from the 500 available on the free tier — and creating 20 chat folders with 200 chats in each. Pricing for this new service tier has not been disclosed as of this writing, but according to Techcrunch, estimates are closer to the $6 mark.
The path to monetization
This isn’t Telegram’s first attempt to monetize services on the platform, which provides messaging and content management systems to thousands of individuals and companies around the world. The company launched sponsored messages last year, allowing advertisers to deliver such messages to large channels with more than 1,000 subscribers.
The biggest monetization attempt, however, was the launch of Telegram’s own token, gram.
