DETROIT (Reuters)-Our Next Energy (ONE), a two-year-old Michigan startup, said on Wednesday that it has tested a prototype of its new battery on Tesla (NASDAQ:) Model S. Travel 752 miles (1,210 kilometers) before charging.

ONE founder and CEO Mujeeb Ijaz (Mujeeb Ijaz) said that ONE’s goal is to start producing battery packs with similar mileage by the end of 2023—about twice that of most existing electric vehicles.

“We plan to build (the battery) in North America and believe it can be done economically,” Ijaz said in an interview.

ONE focuses on developing an advanced remote battery that uses safer and more sustainable materials while packing more energy into smaller, cheaper packaging.

Ijaz has 30 years of industry experience and was a senior executive at Apple (NASDAQ:) and A123 Systems, where he led the development of electric vehicle battery systems.

For ONE’s Gemini battery, Ijaz said: “We want to eliminate nickel and cobalt at the same time, but we don’t want to give up energy density. Our goal is to reinvent battery chemistry and battery structure” to provide at least 750 miles between charges recharge mileage.

“If you put in so much energy, you can meet any customer request-a round trip from Detroit to Chicago, or a tow truck.”

ONE’s endurance goals even go far beyond the best electric vehicles currently, including Lucid Air, which provides more than 500 miles of endurance in the top version.

Ijaz said that ONE chose Tesla Model S to showcase its prototype battery because “it has a fairly high efficiency and a fairly large battery pack,” which can provide enough space to install ONE’s batteries.

ONE stated that the test was conducted during a road test in Michigan in late December, with an average speed of 55 miles per hour.
