Looking back, it is surprising that since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down large public gatherings, now, as events slowly but surely continue to re-enter social life, new era of star wars has been formed. High Republic may have to rain or shine It’s been around for the past few years, but now, in the first face-to-face panel discussion since they first announced “Project Luminous,” its architects can look back What did they do Together.
“This is the last moment when the lights are on [at the end of our panel]. Until then, I don’t think I’ll really accept how many people are sitting in that room,” Kevin Scott, author of Marvel’s first installment. High Republic comics, then novels rising stormrecently told io9 following the initiative’s panel star wars Celebrate Anaheim. “It’s a good thing…I freak out. When the lights come on, it’s like the party is over. But it’s a good thing! Because it’s like seeing the room full of people, yeah… It’s incredible.”
“When they throw that blue sign second stage Everyone goes, “Wow!” And I don’t think any of us anticipated that, but that’s pretty cool — to me, it just lets you know that people are really excited about Phase 2, not No,” Charles Soule, his novel Jedi Light It added that the series will begin in early 2021. “Because we’re all used to it now, we’ve been talking about it for over a year…but phase two, going back in time like that? I think it’s a very important thing, narrative. We take it together Take the risk. It’s cool to see it pay off, and even though we’re pulling them out of the suspense and giving them all these new roles, people are still excited and people are still ready for it. That’s so cool. “
“It’s one thing to see or read that people have nice things to say about you on Twitter, but it’s quite a different thing to see thousands of people in a room taking time out to spend their day – Celebration and A lot of other cool distractions – sit here and listen to us talk about these books and comics, which we’ve put together,” added Daniel José Older. “The world we made. So, really, really… we’re doing something special here.”
For all writers with a passion for their work, it’s not just the larger philosophical picture. Some of them just involve seeing star wars Fans are really excited for sentient rock. “For me,” laughs Claudia Gray, “it’s watching a Geode cosplayer!”
With the Phase 2 High Republic—title Jedi quest-Take readers back in time star wars A prequel trilogy, Celebration is the first time the authors of the publishing initiative have been able to see in person the overwhelming response to their work in this distant galactic new age. Check out io9’s full interview with author team Justina Ireland and the aforementioned Scott, Soule, Older and Gray.
James Whitbrook, io9: Justina, you are High Republic So far, the story has been explored for the YA audience, as well as characters that intend to share a similar, younger age with the target audience, such as Vernestra. Onend what we know about PHase 2 has so far focused on younger audiences, and a crucial young perspective in stories similar to hers. Why opening that window into this period is so important to you Star Wars?
Justina Ireland: Yeah, so for me, it really comes down to…no one really becomes a Star Wars fan when they’re 40? A few do, but most of us grew up as Star Wars fans. We all have grown up friends who say, “Don’t you like Star Wars?” “I don’t like that.” *pant! * “My heart!” But it’s really important to realize that the next generation of Star Wars fans will be the same. I was one of those people who loved Jedi Academy in the 90s, even though it was soapy and bad…
Claudia Gray: That’s it I like it!
Ireland: Yes, it is not what it is, but what it is. So I think it’s very important to get young readers into the fandom. Because, honestly, if my mom or dad said, “But you love Star Wars!” I’d be like, “Hell, no.” Right? But we had the benefit of it when it was young, and now a lot of fans are old. seasoning. So attracting young readers is really important.I remember when clone wars Came out because I’m seasoned too.Everyone said, “It’s a children’s cartoon! That’s not Star Wars.” I know we’ve all rewritten history, but that’s how I felt at the time clone wars come out. clone wars is your best Star Wars storytelling in a long time. So I think, you have to give everyone a space in the fandom, otherwise what’s the point?
io9: Charles, switch tracks, your first work seek is the new Marvel Comics series blade, about Jedi Master Potter Engel. When you were figuring out what you wanted from Phase 2, what drew you to tell the story right away?
soul: I mean, Porter Engel is an old character, he’s three hundred years old. Talk about experience. So, I know who he is Jedi Light, he has this really complicated past for him. He felt really complicated. He has to do a lot of mental gymnastics to get himself to a place where he can smile, be happy, cook stew and be the happy partner we need. It wasn’t easy for him to go there, to go there…I don’t know why, but I always knew I wanted to know. So, when you get the chance to write something from 150 years ago, it’s really, “This is the story I want to tell in this period.” Luckily, I’ll do it.
io9: Daniel, meanwhile, you are ECG, injects a lot of humor into the scene even as events get darker. Is this something that you think you’re going to move on to Phase 2? Why is it so important to you?
elder: Well, by then, that’s the distinction we’re making, distinguishing this era from this era, and that’s definitely one of the ways we’re doing it across the board. For myself, it’s kind of like the Jedi creed of balance: balance is so important, being in balance with the Force, etc. Knowing where we were going in phase one, I knew we needed to bake something in the middle. There needs to be some light periods in the middle of what’s going on. That’s what storytelling is about, people are deeply divided by it, and I want to give them something like… On the one hand, it’s almost like a double-edged sword. Because it’s like, “It’s a really relaxing moment to get you out of all the heavy stuff.” But on the other hand, it makes the heavy stuff heavier. Because everyone is poking at how many starlight beacon towers there are at home, making this tragedy even more tragic, like “let’s go to the kitchen and play together.”
io9: Speaking of that tragedy, Claudia, you were the one with meteor– very dramatic. But I would like to ask, what challenges did you have in threading the needle through these different stories and formats from the first phase of work to now the second phase? Jedi Quest comics?
grey: When it comes to the first two novels, it’s clear, “Can I get Geode in the book, naturally?” It’s a shift.several characters are the same go dark, but a few are not. It’s a little scary to come in deal with elza For the first time at this exact moment, especially with Stellan, it is his conclusion in the story. So, it’s a leap. I’d say threading the needle, that’s the whole story. It’s all part of a large tapestry. I don’t have to do that much. It’s done because we all conceived the story and put it together — thank goodness it would have been very, very difficult to put it together otherwise.
Jedi Quest, at least at this very early stage, is still on my mind – and of course, it’s perfect. Literature has never seen this…then you write the first page and you’re like, * Wow! * you know? “Why do they keep eating yogurt?! There’s so much yogurt on this page!” This is a departure, both from the main narrative and in tone. I don’t think it’s like anything I’ve ever done before. I am very happy to do this. I guess that’s all I can say.
io9: Calvin, I want to ask you: you do a lot of work in Marvel comics, and then in ups and downs, you have to see the many personal crises the Jedi faced during this enlightened time, seen as the embodiment of kindness, no matter how they struggled. Moving into Phase Two and the more exploratory era of the Republic, what challenges will we see these characters face as individuals are cut off from the Jedi and Republic structures?
Scott: I think you’ll see – somehow done in my Phase 1 material – especially the relationship between the Jedi [in Phase 2]. So, you get the father-daughter relationship between Sskeer and Keeve, which I’m not going to write about, but it’s what it is.In the second stage, you will see how the Jedi interact with other People…it’s one thing we’re all talking about, the Jedi is out there. They are not in their monastery. They are outside, with people. In the second stage, this is definitely the world they are in. They spend more time with non-Jedi people than they do with Jedi people. I think that’s what’s exciting about this phase.
Star Wars: The High Republicthe second stage, Jedi Queststarting in October this year.
