A fire broke out in the Parliament Building in Cape Town, South Africa.

At around 05:30 GMT on Sunday, firefighters appeared in the building and saw the fire and huge smoke.

“The roof is on fire, and the National Assembly building is on fire,” a spokesperson for the city’s emergency services told AFP, requesting reinforcements on the spot.

“The fire was not under control and there were reports of cracks in the walls of the building,” he added.

There is no indication that what might have caused the fire.

According to local media News24, 36 firefighters were at the scene and the authorities called for more resources to control the fire.
