7:25 a.m. Pacific Time -Byers just made a tearful explanation for her withdrawal from the game… saying it has nothing to do with injuries-she has been struggling with mental health issues.
“It’s just that my self-esteem has been hurt a little bit,” Byers told reporters.
“After my performance, I don’t want to participate in other activities, so I think I will take a step back,” she added.
Byers said she has been seeing a therapist to help her fight the “demon”… and will use Wednesday as “mental health day.”
“I must focus on my mental health, not endanger my health and happiness.”
Byers kept his door open during Thursday’s game.
6:23 a.m. Pacific Time – The US team can still be on the podium without Byers… won the silver medal and the Russian Olympic Committee (aka Russia) won the gold medal.
Simone Byers Has withdrawn from the Tokyo gymnastics team finals-The Olympic superstar is dealing with a “medical problem” that forces her to withdraw from the competition, officials said.
There are conflicting reports about what caused Byers-probably the greatest gymnast of all time-to withdraw from the competition. The 24-year-old player appeared to be injured early in the game, but the NBC broadcast stated that a coach claimed that her withdrawal was due to “mental problems.”
The United States Gymnastics team issued a statement on Tuesday morning… said: “Simon Byers withdrew from the team final due to medical issues. She will be evaluated daily to determine the medical pass rate for future matches.”
Bile seemed to have injured her leg after her vault attempted to land…talk to the coach and leave the floor, then wrap around her right leg when returning.
For the US team, this is shocking news-the red, white and blue teams are the third consecutive favorites to win the gold medal.
On Monday, Byers talked about the pressure to succeed after the preliminaries… He said: “Sometimes I really feel like I am carrying the burden of the world on my shoulders.”
“I know I dismissed it and made it look like stress has no effect on me, but damn it is sometimes difficult hahaha! The Olympics are not a joke! But I am so happy that my family can be with me virtually 🤍 They mean the world to me!”
The 4-time gold medalist still has hope-she may recover in time for Thursday’s all-around finals.
