Russian battalion wiped out in failed river crossing in eastern Ukraine

Ukrainian forces destroyed nearly all the armored vehicles of a Russian battalion trying to cross a river in eastern Ukraine, British intelligence officials said on Friday.

Burnt vehicles can be seen in satellite photos near the Sivirski Donets River, which flows through Donetsk and Luhansk.

The British Ministry of Defence tweeted: “River crossing in a contested environment is a high-risk operation and shows that Russian commanders are under pressure to make progress in eastern Ukraine.”

Satellite imagery obtained by CNN showed heavy fighting near the site, with the Ukrainians blowing up two Russian pontoon bridges, leaving only the Russians to build a third.

Russia has invested a lot of energy in the region, trying to encircle the Ukrainian army and advance the city of Severo Donetsk.

The ministry said that after withdrawing and redeploying troops from the Kyiv and Chernihiv regions, the Russian army failed to make any significant progress despite concentrating its forces in the east.
