Pope Francis warned the world to “withdraw from democracy” and attacked nationalism

Pope Francis warned the world that a “democratic regression” is taking place in Europe and other countries.

During a three-day visit to Greece, the pope made a comment, warning against nationalism and populism.

“[Democracy] It’s complicated, authoritarianism is mandatory, and the simple answer to populism seems attractive,” the pope said.

The Pope added that Europe and other places are “witnessing the regression of democracy”.

Before the pope’s comments, nationalist leaders from France and Italy held a summit in Warsaw to discuss the establishment of a grand coalition of such politicians.

The Pope called on the international community to reject this idea and urged action on climate change, global poverty and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Pope called on the world to “open up a path to peace through multilateralism, and not ultimately be stifled by excessive nationalist demands.”
