Podcast: What is artificial intelligence? We do this to help.

Defining what artificial intelligence is or not can be tricky (or difficult). There are so many that even experts sometimes get it wrong. This is why Karen Hao, senior AI editor at MIT Technology Review, created a flowchart to explain all this. In this reward content, our host and her team reimagined Hao Original report, To gamify it into a radio drama.

Defining what is or is not artificial intelligence can be a bit difficult. So much so that even experts sometimes make mistakes. That’s why Karen Hao, the senior AI editor of Tech Review, created a flowchart to explain it… we became the next episode together… which is stupid. So interesting. We hope it helps.

Players will ask what it is…or not…artificial intelligence…and…I brought an “assistant” to help answer…

Emma Sillikens: Hello, Alexa.

Emma Sillikens: Because of this, we are all on the same page…artificial intelligence…in the broadest sense, it refers to a machine that can learn, reason, and act on its own. When faced with new situations, they can make their own decisions, just like humans and animals do.

Emma Sillikens: Now this bell… [SOT: ding] …Meaning artificial intelligence that recognizes correctly…and this buzzer… [SOT: buzzer, crowd sigh] Hmm…not so much.

Emma Sillikens: OK. So, let’s test your knowledge… get ready… set up… player one, let’s go! ..

Eric Munguin: Can “it” be seen…

voice assistant: Yes.

Eric Munguin: It can recognize what it sees…

voice assistant: Do not…[SOT: buzzer]

Emma Sillikens: Okay, that’s just a camera…

Eric Munguin: Okay okay…but if it were able Identify what it sees?

Emma Sillikens: Yes-that is computer vision and image processing. Contestant number two!

Kyle Thomas Hemingway: can you hear…

voice assistant: Yes

Kyle Thomas Hemingway: Does it respond to what it hears in a useful and wise way?

voice assistant: Yes

Emma Sillikens: So, this is NLP—Natural Language Processing.

The goal of this artificial intelligence is to help computers understand human language in a useful way.

But if it No Respond to what it hears in a useful and wise way. Can this also be artificial intelligence?

Kyle Thomas Hemingway: If it were to transcribe what you said…

[SOT: bell ding, ding, ding]

Emma Sillikens: Yes! This is also artificial intelligence-it is speech recognition, it is similar, but using spoken language instead of text. A new round of questions! Player 1.

voice assistant: Yes

Eric Munguin: Are you reading what you typed?

voice assistant: Do not

Eric Munguin: Is it to read a paragraph of text?

voice assistant: Yes

Kyle Thomas Hemingway: Does it respond in a wise and useful way?

voice assistant: Yes

voice assistant: Yes

Eric Munguin: Does it look for patterns in massive amounts of data?

voice assistant: Yes

Eric Munguin: Are these models used to make decisions?

Emma Sillikens: Well, if not, it sounds like math…

Eric Munguin: But what if it uses patterns to make decisions?

voice assistant: Yes

Emma Sillikens: Then there is machine learning-machines learn through experience. OK. The last round!

Kyle Thomas Hemingway: Can it be moved?

voice assistant: Yes.

Kyle Thomas Hemingway: Alone, no help?

voice assistant: Yes.

[SOT: ding, ding, ding]

Kyle Thomas Hemingway: Does it move based on what it sees and hears?

voice assistant: Yes.

Kyle Thomas Hemingway: Are you sure it does not just move along a pre-programmed path?

voice assistant: [Alexa] Um. I have no idea.

Emma Sillikens: Very interesting… but if so, it’s just a robot.

Kyle Thomas Hemingway: Okay, let’s try again. Does it move along a predetermined path?

voice assistant: Do not.

Emma Sillikens: Okay, this is an intelligent robot, meaning that it uses artificial intelligence to make some of its own decisions.
