Ahead of the NAMM 2022 trade show in Anaheim next weekend, San Francisco’s Playtime Project Launched a pair of toys, the Blipbox SK2 synth and Blipbox myTrackgroovebox, designed to help the youngest music lovers create, record, save and share electronic beats and melodies.
The spatial surface detail of the SK2 belies its ability to generate over 400 pre-recorded melodies, ranging from chip tunings to orchestral, as well as multi-mode filters, 16 oscillator schemes and stereo multi-tap delay capabilities. A signal flow diagram is printed on the front of the unit, and all controls are labeled, making it easy for even basement-level beginners to learn and discover new synth sounds. Users will be able to export their tracks via the 1⁄4″ audio output and import new sounds via MIDI In.
Instead, myTRACK is a kid-sized multitrack sampling device that uses a 5×5 grid of playback pads to trigger beats and sequences (think, a low-profile Ableton Push 2). Each of the 48 pre-included instruments can be applied to any or all of the five available tracks, as well as procedural effects controlled by the device’s physical joysticks. In fact, many of myTRACK’s more advanced features are presented as dedicated physical buttons rather than hidden submenu options. Additionally, these prepackaged sounds and sequences can be updated via USB-C to include new combinations such as orchestral, hip-hop, jazz, rock, and EDM. The built-in microphone allows your future Grandmaster Flash to explore the outside world in search of new sounds to capture and modulate. myTRACK provides a 5-pin MIDI OUT port so that devices can connect and control the SK2, while its USB-C port is a class-compliant USB MIDI input and output, so you can use it on any Mac or Windows digital audio workstation.
The SK2 will retail for $199 and will be available in November 2022. myTRACK will be available in Q1 2023 for $249
