Pixar’s ‘Lightyear’ flops at the box office

Disney Pixar’s latest film — Chris Evans as Buzz Lightyear — is estimated to have grossed an estimated $51 million this weekend in North America.

That figure fell short of industry expectations, with the film expected to fetch around $70 million. The film reportedly grossed $85.6 million worldwide. disney (DIS).

The film also failed to clinch the top spot, coming in at No. 2 after Universal’s second weekend of Jurassic World: Reign, with an estimated $58.6 million.

So why hasn’t “Light Years” been a hit?

The film is based on characters from the popular Toy Story franchise 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a solid, if not spectacular, score. But there are several factors that could reduce turnout.

For starters, it might be hard for the audience to know what the movie is about. It’s not exactly a “Toy Story” movie, as “Light Years” is billed as a movie about the man behind the toy rather than the toy itself. Ultimately, the family may be confused about the film, which could lead them to leave.

It’s also the first Pixar movie to hit theaters since 2020. The studio’s last three films — “Soul,” “Luca,” and “Go Red” — all went straight to Disney+. The option to send those movies to streaming could prompt viewers to stay home and wait for “Lightyear” to land on Disney+, rather than buy tickets.

All in all, “Light Years” may still find audiences in the next few weeks, as there aren’t many family fares at the box office right now. Universal Pictures and Illumination’s “Minions: The Rise of Gru” — the next major family film — won’t hit theaters until July 1.

Elsewhere at the box office, “Top Gun: Maverick” continued to perform well. The Paramount film starring Tom Cruise came in third with $44 million in its fourth weekend. That’s down just 15% compared to last week.

The film — which Cruise reprised his role as Pete “The Maverick” Mitchell from 1986’s “Top Gun” — has made $885 million worldwide to date.
