On Friday, the Supreme Court ended nearly half a century of constitutional protections for abortion in the United States.

The court’s conservative majority decision overturned the landmark Roe v Wade ruling expected to lead to abortion bans in about half of the 50 states.

The ruling, unthinkable a few years ago, is the culmination of a decades-long effort by abortion opponents, thanks to three of former President Donald Trump’s appointees bolstering the right wing of the court.

“[We] argues that the Constitution does not confer the right to abortion. Roe and Casey must be overruled, and the authority to regulate abortion must be returned to the people and their elected representatives,” Justice Samuel Alito wrote.

Both sides predicted that the fight over abortion would continue in state capitals and Washington, with Justice Clarence Thomas, a majority on Friday, calling on the court to overturn other high court protections for same-sex marriage, same-sex sex and the use of the birth control pill.
