Paula Badosa beats Coco Gauff to reach fourth semifinal of the year

SAN JOSE, Calif. — No. 2 seed Paula Bardoza entered her fourth of the year on Friday with a 7-6(4), 6-2 victory over Coco Gough at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic Semifinals.

Bardoza scored nine points in a row while Goff struggled on serve and led 2-0 in the second set before leading 5-1. Goff had six double faults in the first set, including the final two points.

“It’s never easy to deal with such an aggressive player with a big serve,” Bardoza said. “I think I adapted very well in the (asterisk) (end) of the first set, I played a perfect tie-break, so I’m very happy about that.”

Badosa will play No. 7 seed Daria Kasatkina on Saturday.

2021 finalist Kasatkina defeated Aryna Sabalenka 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 in 2 hours and 23 minutes. Sabalenka, who was hurt by injuries late in the game, had 22 double faults.

The other semifinal will see ninth seed Veronica Kudmetova play unseeded Shelby Rodgers.
