(Reuters)-On Wednesday, two New York lawyers pleaded guilty to participating in the Molotov cocktail attack in protests triggered by the death of George Floyd in May 2020.
Prosecutors said that one of the lawyers, Urooj Rahman, threw a bottle full of gasoline into an empty police car, tried to distribute molotov cocktails to others, and fled in a minivan driven by Colinford Mattis.
This incident occurred during the Brooklyn protests, after Black Freud was killed by a white policeman in Minneapolis, sparking widespread protests against racism and police violence.
Both Rahman, 32, and Matisse, 34, pleaded guilty to one count of possessing or manufacturing a destructive device in federal court in Brooklyn.
Matisse said: “I deeply regret my behavior and hope that I can make a better choice that night.”
Rahman also expressed regret. Both admitted that they were likely to be disqualified due to confession.
U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan (Brian Cogan) is scheduled to pronounce his sentence on February 8. According to the sentencing clauses related to terrorism, they will face up to 10 years in prison.
“The increase in terrorism will be a big problem. I don’t know where I am going to come from,” Cogan said.
Rahman’s lawyer, Paul Shechtman, said the couple “should not be sentenced to jail for actions that took place during the craze on one of the hottest nights in modern American history.”
Mattis, a partner of Pryor Cashman, was taken on leave in April 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and then suspended after being arrested. Rahman represents tenants in the Bronx as a public interest lawyer.
