More than a dozen killed in NYC apartment building fire | News

Nine children were killed and dozens more injured in the Bronx fire, officials said.

At least 19 people, including nine children, were killed and dozens injured in an apartment building fire in New York City, New York City officials and U.S. media reported.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that 19 people were killed in a fire at a 19-story apartment building in the Bronx around 11 a.m. Sunday.

“Right now we have 19 confirmed deaths and many more are in critical condition,” Adams said in an interview with the US media network CNN.

Nine of the dead were children, the Associated Press reported, citing a city official.

More than five people were injured and 13 remain in critical condition at the hospital, said Stefan Ringel, a senior adviser to the mayor of Adams.

About 200 firefighters were dispatched to put out the blaze. The city’s fire chief, Daniel Nigro, told reporters the reason was unclear.

“Members found victims on every level of the stairwell and rescued them in cardiac and respiratory arrest,” he said.

Smoke has spread to every floor of the building, likely because it started with the apartment door open and victims inhaling a lot of smoke, Nigro said.
