Magnus Carlson leads the chess championship with an epic 136-step victory

After 136 steps, Norway’s world chess champion Magnus Carlson scored his first decisive result in the Dubai Championship against Russian grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi on Friday.

The first five games of the original 14 games all ended in a tie. In most of Friday’s games, Carlson had difficulty breaking through the Russians’ tough defense. Friday’s match is one of the longest matches in the 150-year history of the official World Chess Championship.

White maintained a small but lasting advantage in the Catalan start and eventually traded his queen for Nepomniachtchi’s two cars and got an endgame in which White had all the chances of winning. But the black queen and the active bishop made a tenacious defense, even if the white pawn exerted pressure on the black king and the weak king-wing pawn.

At the 80th step, White can change the situation again, trading his car for Black’s bishops and pawns, and gaining a clear path for the e-pawns he passes. It takes 30 subtle maneuvers for White to advance the key pawns while protecting his king from harassment and inspection by the Black Queen.

Until the 133th step, Black still seemed to be in a tie. At the time, 133…Qe7+ or 133…Qa7 might have saved the game by keeping it in seventh place. But it was over after 133… Qg6? ? 134. Rf7! Kd8 (Qxe6 135. Ng7+ Kxf7 136. Nxe6 Kxe6 137. Kg5 is the white victory) 135. f5 Qg1 136. Ng7, black folds because there is no good way to prevent the white e-pawn from running out of his own queen check after chasing.

Carlson now leads 3 1/2 to 2 1/2. The seventh game of the game will be played on Saturday, and the Russian team has the advantage of White. If the 14 games are tied, there will be a one-day quick and blitz playoff game to decide the winner.
