This is only the second year that Juneteenth is a national holiday, but it’s officially in effect Lizzo Much longer than that, and – like so many other celebrities – she’s got to celebrate.
The singer said she’s been celebrating Juneteenth since she was a child in Houston, but for the third year in a row, she’s getting her fans in on the festivities with a huge giveaway that includes a chance for them to fly out and hang out with her .
Lizzo also posted why the holiday is so important – “Juneusian is about giving the black citizens of this country our own Declaration of Independence. It’s about our complex and nuanced history with this country”.
June 19, aka Juneteenth, marks the day in 1865 the last enslaved person in America — in Galveston, Texas — got word President Lincoln Two and a half years ago, slavery was abolished with the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. It will finally be recognized as a federal holiday in 2021.

As festival organizers say, Juneteenth is a time for all Americans to celebrate freedom.
