Leyland Bannon singles on first major league field, Orioles lead Cardinals 3-2

stone.Luis – Leland Bannon becomes third Baltimore player since 2000 to be hit in first game of his major league career, Jorge Mateo and Anthony Bemum homer Hit, Orioles beat St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 on Thursday.

“I let him know he was in the majors an hour before the game,” Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde said. “So, he will never forget that. I know this is a special day for him and his family.”

Bannon, a 26-year-old third baseman, was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk before the game and singled from Steven Matz’s (3-3) field in the second inning with 2 outs to bat at Mateo. The batter bats the Orioles first.

“I trust scouting reports. I stick to my approach,” Bannon said. “I got a middle position and hit a good swing on it. It was a fastball in the middle.”

Bannon went 1 for 4 with strikeouts and two outs. As Xavier’s 2017 Big East Player of the Year, he was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the eighth round of the 2017 amateur draft and traded to Baltimore in July 2018 in a deal that brought Manny Machado to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“I really felt like I didn’t get a foothold until around the fifth inning,” Bannon said. “After a few hits, that’s when it really sank into where I was. It felt weird to be on the field early in the game. It was awesome. It was definitely a good thing to be here. Cool in the locker room. “

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the previous Orioles hit in their first game were Ryan Hughes against Boston on April 24, 2010 and Willie Morale against Detroit on April 9, 2000 s.

Mats lost his second straight start, allowing 3 runs and 7 hits in 6 2/3 innings with 7 strikeouts and no walks.

“In terms of things, it was definitely better today,” said Mats, whose previous start lasted only two innings, hitting a career-high eight and three home runs. “A good stepping stone.”
