Sadie Sink’s character Max listened to the song until her friend played it repeatedly to help her find her way back.
“By presenting ‘Running Up That Hill’ in such a positive way – as a talisman for Max (one of the main female characters) – the song has been brought into the emotional stage of her story,” Bush wrote. “The power of fear, conflict and love surrounds her and her friends.”
“I salute the courage of the Duffer Brothers in taking this new series into a more mature and dark place. I am so grateful that they brought this song into the lives of so many people,” Bush added. “I’m overwhelmed by the scale of love and support this song has received, it’s all happening so fast, it’s as if it’s being driven by the force of an element.”
“I have to admit I’m really moved by all this,” Bush said of the news. “Thank you so much for making this song number one in such an unexpected way.”
