Iraqi security sources say drone attacks on US bases have been thwarted Reuters

Baghdad (Reuters)-Two armed drones were shot down on Monday as they approached the Iraqi military base where U.S. troops are stationed near Baghdad International Airport. Iraqi security sources said, adding that no one was injured in the incident.

The attack happened as Iran and its allies in Iraq coincided with the second anniversary of the assassination of Qassem Soleimani, a senior Iranian general.

Soleimani was killed in a drone attack near Baghdad Airport ordered by then-U.S. President Donald Trump.

Commenting on the attack, an official from the International Military Alliance led by the United States said that the base’s defense system had attacked “two fixed-wing suicide drones. They were shot down without any accidents.”

The coalition official said in a brief statement: “This is a dangerous attack on a civilian airport.”

Did not immediately claim responsibility for the attack. Some Iraqi officials claim that armed groups backed by Iran have claimed responsibility for similar incidents in the past.

The video provided by the coalition official showed that the official was talking about the wreckage of two fixed-wing drones that were destroyed in the attack. One of the drones had the words “Soleimani’s Revenge” clearly visible on the wing. .

On January 3, 2020, Soleimani, the head of the overseas elite forces of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, and Abu Mahdi Mohandis, leader of the Iraqi militia, were killed in a U.S. drone attack on his convoy at Baghdad Airport .

Hundreds of supporters of the Iranian-backed militia gathered at Baghdad Airport on Sunday to commemorate the anniversary of Soleimani’s death and chanted anti-US slogans.
