(Reuters)-The head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, will urge the establishment of an industry body in his first appearance in Congress on Wednesday to determine best practices to help young people stay online.

Mosseri stated in a written testimony from the Senate panel that industry bodies should address “how to verify age, how to design age-appropriate experiences, and how to establish parental control.”

The photo-sharing app Instagram and its parent company Meta Platforms Inc, formerly known as Facebook (NASDAQ:), are subject to strict scrutiny due to the potential impact of their services on the mental health and online safety of young users.

Mosseri stated that companies like Instagram “should comply with these standards in order to obtain partial protection under our Section 230.” This refers to a key Internet law in the United States that protects technology platforms from content posted by users. Take responsibility.

In a series of announcements on the safety of young users released on Tuesday, Instagram stated that it will be stricter on the types of content recommended to teenagers and will disable the ability for people to flag or mention teenagers who have not followed them on the app. Introduce parental control next year.

Due to growing opposition to the project, the app has suspended plans to launch an Instagram version for children since September. [L4N2QT2NJ]

Earlier, the Wall Street Journal reported that internal documents leaked by former Facebook employee Frances Haugen (Frances Haugen) showed that the company knew that Instagram could have harmful mental health effects on teenagers.

In written testimony on Wednesday, Mosseri responded to the company’s previous statement that the public report incorrectly described internal research.
