Our planet also changes position. After six months, the earth will move from one side of the sun to the other. That’s a distance change of nearly 300 million kilometers, enough to cause a noticeable change in the position of some of the nearest stars. In fact, parallax is an important tool for measuring distances to these stars. (here are other How to measure distances to stars.)
So yes, the zodiac signs change — but not much.
find your longitude
Here’s how to find longitude using a clock and a star map. Let’s start with the star map. Assuming that at 4AM local time (let’s call it Greenwich Mean Time), a star on this chart will always be directly above a point in Greenwich, England. (I didn’t just pick Greenwich. The prime meridian, or 0 degrees longitude, goes right through Royal Observatory Greenwich, so it is good for measurement. )
Now let’s assume you are in another location and try to figure out where you are by using the same star. You need to know when that star appears directly overhead Your Place. Hence the clock.
Checking the time will reveal that at your location, the star appears directly overhead at 1am, not 4am—three hours before Greenwich. This means you are west of Geenwich for 3 hours out of a 24 hour period. If you want to convert it to degrees, then (3/24) × 360 = 45 degrees. This will put you on a line of longitude that runs through Greenland and Brazil. (Things might be a little more complicated than that, since you probably won’t see a star directly overhead, but you get the idea.)
Next, if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, you can use Polaris to calculate your latitude and determine your exact location on Earth, where those lines of longitude and latitude cross. Hope it’s not in the mid-Atlantic.
What’s wrong moon knight?
It’s time to talk Moon Knight. (Some spoilers ahead.) In Episode 3, Moon Knight, Khonshu’s Earth avatar, teamed up with Marc’s wife Layla. They are trying to find the tomb of the Egyptian god Amit. If Amit is released, she’ll do some bad things to humans, so they really want to be there first. They pieced together the various parts of the shroud to form an ancient star map, and wanted to use it to find the location of the tomb, like a navigation in the sky.
But there’s a catch: this map was made 2,000 years ago, so the constellations are in the wrong order. The stars have moved to new locations. Since Moon Knight is an avatar of Khonshu, he uses his powers to move the stars in the sky back to the mode shown when the map was created. The problem is solved. Moon Knight and Layla are able to reach Amit’s tomb.
