Marina Mahathir said the 96-year-old had been receiving treatment at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur for the past two days.

On Saturday, as news of Mahathir’s readmission spread, the media poured into the hospital, where he was also visited by current Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

In a statement, his daughter said he was undergoing follow-up care after undergoing surgery at the same facility about two weeks ago.

“His condition is now stable and he is responding well to treatment,” she said.

She added that his family “asked people to pray for him for a full recovery”.

In December last year, Mahathir also spent a few days in hospital for tests.

Over the years, he suffered from many heart problems, suffered multiple heart attacks and underwent bypass surgery.

Mahathir is one of the most influential political figures in Malaysia, served twice as Prime Minister for a total of 24 years.

He was leader from 1981 to 2003 before returning to power in 2018 at the age of 92, leading the reformist coalition in the wake of the massive 1MDB corruption scandal.

But the government fell in 2020 due to infighting.
