Tesla CEO Elon Musk criticized Twitter on Friday over its new non-fungible token (NFT) profile picture service. “It’s annoying,” Musk wrote. “Twitter spends engineering resources on this bs while crypto scammers throw spam blocking parties in every thread!?”

Twitter launched its NFT avatar service on Thursday, allowing users to set NFTs as their avatars. NFT profile pictures are displayed in special hexagons. “Currently Twitter only supports static image NFTs (JPEG, PNG) minted on the Ethereum blockchain,” the company clarified.

Musk’s tweet received a lot of comments. Some agreed with the Tesla CEO that Twitter should make better use of its resources, emphasizing the need to crack down on crypto scammers and spam bots on the platform.

Former Google marketing manager Adam Singer agreed with Musk, tweeting:

Elon is right about this. Twitter’s product teams need to do a better job of prioritizing what really matters to the user experience.

He added: “By the way, every Elon Tweet comment section is a simple honeypot that they can use against tons of spammers/cheaters (but they don’t do anything).”

However, some have pushed back against Musk for dedicating Tesla’s engineering resources to cryptocurrencies, in particular accepting the meme cryptocurrency Dogecoin (DOGE).
