LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The dark western “Dog Power” and the remake of “West Side Story” won their biggest awards on Sunday at a scaled-down Golden Globes ceremony that lacked top Hollywood television. And the usual gorgeous lineup of movie stars. .

Actors, directors and film studios have largely ignored the Golden Globes this year after criticizing its organizer, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), in 2021 for questionable ethics policies and no black members. Longtime broadcaster NBC chose not to air this year’s awards.

The HFPA, which has expanded and diversified its membership and overhauled its practices, announced its selection at a closed-door ceremony in Beverly Hills. Recipients of HFPA charitable grants sit in the audience and present awards. Winners are announced via social media and the Golden Globes website.

Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story, a young love story set in a street gang, was voted best musical or comedy and took home three trophies, including Rachel Chee Greer’s Best Actress. “Dog Power” also won three awards, including best director, for Jane Campion.

Other acting credits go to Will Smith for her role as the staunch father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams in ‘King Richard’ while Nicole Kidman in ‘Being Ricardo’ Lucille Ball (NYSE: ). Andrew Garfield’s role in the musical “Tick Tick…Boom!”

On the TV side, brutal corporate family saga “The Heirs” won best drama, and “Hackers” about a declining female comedian won best comedy.

Netflix (NASDAQ: ) released “Dog Power,” leading all studios with four movie awards. HBO and HBO Max took home the most TV accolades, with six.

The Golden Globes typically draw millions of TV viewers for celebrity-filled red carpets and champagne dinners, a glamorous and informal contrast to the Oscars, the industry’s highest film honor.

Winning the Golden Globe has also boosted the film’s Oscar race in the past. This year, the significance was less clear, with only a handful of celebrities acknowledging their Universal nominations.

Awards watchers will be keeping an eye out for other upcoming accolades from groups like the Screen Actors Guild and the Producers Guild of America. The Oscars are scheduled to be presented on March 27.

Critics objected that the HFPA did not have any black members and questioned whether close ties to Hollywood studios would influence the selection of nominees and winners. In May, Tom Cruise returned the three Golden Globe figurines he won.

HFPA responds to https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/golden-globes-group-adds-new-members-it-works-diversify-2021-10-01 with 21 new members, 6 of whom are black, Prohibit gifts and favors and implement diversity and sexual harassment training. The organization now has 105 members and plans to expand this year.

“We are on a path of change and we will not rest,” HFPA president Helen Hoehne said in a statement on Sunday.

During the ceremony, HFPA aired a video of actress Jamie Lee Curtis praising the organization’s support of charities that support creators, education, film preservation and other causes.

“I’m proud to be associated with them on this adventure,” Curtis said in the video.
