Digital identities in Metaverse will be represented by avatars with utility

For example, Sebastien Borget, co-founder and COO of The Sandbox, a blockchain-based Metaverse project, told Cointelegraph that avatars are a new representation of user identities in the Metaverse:

“By leveraging avatars, anyone can express themselves digitally in unprecedented ways. Additionally, truly owning their own identity and being able to carry it across multiple decentralized applications and virtual worlds through NFTs is a mainstream audience that is very specific and An easy-to-understand example.”

Borget added that avatars in the metaverse can represent different emotions, tastes and appearances of users. “The avatar ultimately shapes how we interact in the metaverse,” he said.

To put this in perspective, Borget shared The Sandbox’s plans to create an Elvis Presley avatar for use in its Metaverse ecosystem, which would allow millions of users to “transform” into Elvis Presley.

Borget mentioned that the Elvis Avatar will teleport fans through a virtual time capsule to complete entertainment missions. “Users will be able to become members of the Memphis Mafia in The Sandbox Metaverse,” he said. Borget thought such a feature could be very interesting, since the Memphis Mafia was the nickname the media gave to a group of Elvis’ friends, colleagues and employees who accompanied and protected Elvis throughout his career.

David Porte, creative director of Run it Wild, further told Cointelegraph that the studio’s collection of 5,000 unique Elvis avatars will be able to interact with all other avatars in the sandbox.

While entertaining, these features (also known as avatar utilities) are one of the most important elements in securing digital identity in the Metaverse ecosystem. For example, Porte stated that Run it Wild’s ultimate goal with this particular project was to push boundaries by using Web3 tracks like Utilities to create a virtual meeting place for Elvis fandom culture.

Aaron McDonald, co-founder of FLUF World, spells it out – A 3D Metaverse Ecosystem — told Cointelegraph that while avatars visually appeal to the wider community to Web3 capabilities, utility is what gives user personas a purpose. “Utilities help users participate in Metaverse’s economy, which is important because Web3 is about community ownership and community value creation,” he said.

For example, McDonald noted that each character in the FLUF ecosystem has the ability to become an avatar of its owner, serving as their representative in the Metaverse, with a unique purpose and function. Erin Zink, head of strategy at Altered State Machine (ASM), told Cointelegraph that the company is bringing diversity and randomness to the metaverse through AI-powered avatars. “These avatars have different strengths and weaknesses and are unpredictable and unique,” she said. Zink elaborated that ASM’s AI agent has two components:

“One is a visual representation of AI, such as a Bored Ape Yacht club NFT, or a 3D avatar in FLUF World, or even a chatbot on a website. However, that’s just aesthetics. The other half of an agent is the brain. Brain NFTs are able to learn and evolve , and interoperate across different formats and worlds.”

To demonstrate how Brains works, Zink recently explained ASM roll out AI Football Association NFT, consisting of 40,000 3D customizable football characters. According to Zink, the avatars will compete in teams of four in ASM’s upcoming decentralized gaming and money-making soccer game called AIFA. “Combine each of your AIFA All-Stars with an ASM brain and play as a team of four. You can train them and move up the ranks to become a global champion,” she said. Zink added that ASM plans to soon launch a boxing game called “The Next Legends,” which will also use AI-powered characters.

The Future of Digital Identity in Metaverse

While it’s difficult to be completely sure how the metaverse environment will evolve, industry experts believe that avatars and utility are key elements of social interaction and identity development.

Dorian Johannink, co-founder of Seekers and Sylo (creator of the 3D-animated NFT bot that appeared in FLUF World) told Cointelegraph that as NFTs move beyond the JPEG phase, providing more ways for users to interact with assets in the Metaverse is critical: “Character avatars are a starting point, but in order to develop long-term engagement, these assets and environments need to continue to offer deeper unique capabilities that help immerse the experience and provide functional advantages to holders.”

With this in mind, Borget shared that The Sandbox is actively working to bring more collections of avatar NFTs to life in its metaverse, such as the Bored Ape Yacht Club.Sandbox’s official Twitter account posted a tweet on March 27 refer to this. “We would certainly like to see a 3D voxelized version of each 2D collection. While that may soon emerge, there are challenges that could hinder development. For example, Borget talked about the difficulty of converting a collection of 2D NFTs into interactive avatars, noting that the aesthetics of voxels require flair and creativity. Additionally, James Dewhirst, co-founder of Dinodawg Kingdom, an NFT avatar project built on the Solana network, told Cointelegraph that the project is not yet able to build a universal avatar model that can be used across all platforms:

“In order for us to offer different utilities, we needed to make sure our Dinodawgs ran just as well on Unreal Engine as they did on Unity. It was a bespoke and highly complex process, and we needed to work closely with each of our partners, to ensure our avatars work seamlessly on their platform.”

Nick Rose, founder of Ethernity and CEO of NFT creative studio Ethernal Labs, agrees, telling Cointelegraph that the biggest challenge right now is that different metaverses are not interoperable:

“If one were to survey the Metaverse ecosystem today from a height of 60,000 feet, it certainly does not look like a world Earth where continents are interconnected by water. Rather, it is a patchwork of ripples of isolated worlds that build their own Community.”
