ASHBORN — The Washington commanders fired defensive line coach Sam Mills III, a move that surprised the team more than two weeks after training camp, coach Ron Rivera said Tuesday.
Rivera said Mills, who has been working in Washington since 2020, was fired for philosophical differences. The commanders promoted assistant line coach Jeff Zgonina to fill the role.
Rivera and Mills worked together before Commander. Mills, the son of linebacker Sam Mills — who was inducted into the Hall of Fame last weekend — was one of Rivera’s original employees when he was hired by the Carolina Panthers in 2011. In 2018, he was promoted to the Panthers defensive line coach.
