The concert celebrates Juneteenth, the holiday that marked the end of slavery in America. Black artists on stage Sunday night include Earth, Wind & Fire, Mickey Guyton, Khalid and Bell Biv Devoe to name a few.
Also in attendance will be President Joe Biden, former first ladies Michelle Obama and Jill Scott, who will give speaking performances.
The entire creative team behind the concert was Blake, CNN’s Sara Sidner reported before the show, which included Live Nation Urban creators Shawn Gee and Jesse Collins Entertainment. The night also marked the first time the all-black band Re-Collective Orchestra will perform at the Hollywood Bowl, Sidner said.
This is the second year the United States has recognized Juneteenth as a federal holiday, but many black Americans have commemorated the day with parades, parties and family gatherings for years. The holiday is also an opportunity to reflect on the ongoing systemic inequalities black Americans face.
