SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil’s friendly against rival Argentina in Australia in June has been canceled.
The match is part of Brazil’s preparations for the World Cup, but Brazil’s FA coordinator Juninho Paulista said on Wednesday that their Argentine counterparts had decided to cancel the game.
The Argentine Football Federation has not commented publicly on the matter.
Brazil will play friendly matches against South Korea and Japan in Asia on June 2 and 6 respectively, and will now be looking for an African opponent in their place on June 11.
FIFA ruled on Monday that Brazil and Argentina must still play their World Cup qualifiers in September, shortly after officials entered the stadium because some of Argentina’s players violated COVID-19 protocols.
FIFA wants the game to take place this September, but neither team has committed to play.
Coach Tite also announced his friendly squad and brought back striker Gabriel Jesus. The Manchester City striker, who was a starter for Selecao at the last World Cup, is fighting for a place in Qatar.
The only new name on the list is 21-year-old Danilo, a Palmeiras defensive midfielder.
Brazil will play Serbia, Switzerland and Cameroon in Group G of the World Cup starting November 21.
