Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan’s son cleared of drug charges

NEW DELHI (AP) — The son of Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan was cleared Friday in a drug case involving a party aboard a luxury cruise ship, India’s Drug Enforcement Agency said, with no evidence he possessed prohibited drugs or was involved in trafficking Activity.

Aryan Khan, 24, an aspiring actor and director, was arrested in October in a raid on a cruise ship near India’s financial and entertainment capital, Mumbai. He was released on bail three weeks later.

India’s Narcotics Control Board said in a statement on Friday that evidence from the eight-month investigation did not involve Khan. However, it brought charges against 14 others.

Following the raid on the ship, the drug enforcement agency said it had evidence in the form of WhatsApp messages that Khan was involved in the illegal drug trade.

Khan’s lawyer, Mukul Rohatgi, told reporters on Friday that the arrest was “arbitrary” and that the agency did not conduct a medical examination to prove his client was drugged.

The case was widely reported in India, with fans of Aryan Khan insisting he was innocent, while others called for a boycott of his father’s film.

Shahrukh Khan, 56, is known as the king of Bollywood and is India’s most popular actor. In nearly three years, he starred in more than 105 films.

Last September, the Drug Enforcement Administration questioned some of Bollywood’s most famous stars over the death of famous actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Rajput died by suicide, and doctors and police ruled out drug use.
