Canberra, Australia (Associated Press)-The Australian Prime Minister described social media as a “palace of cowards” on Thursday and warned that digital platforms, including Facebook, are responsible for anonymously published defamatory comments.
Anonymous commentators who use social media to slander and bully have become the latest battleground between the government of Prime Minister Scott Morrison and the US tech giants. The government wants social media users to be required to identify themselves.
Australia passed laws this year requiring Google and Facebook to pay for journalism. Australia has also enacted a law that may imprison social media executives and despise technology companies if they stream violent images on their platforms.
Morrison Platforms that say they do not disclose the identity of the person who made the defamatory comment are responsible for these comments.
“The cowards who slander, harass, bully, and publish slanderous remarks anonymously on social media are responsible for what they say,” Morrison Said.
“Social media has become a palace for cowards, where people can go on without saying who they are, destroying people’s lives, telling people the dirtiest and offensive things, and with impunity,” he Add to.
his Australian state and territory governments are eager to rewrite defamation laws. Last month, the High Court set a precedent for the Internet era and ruled that the media can be held responsible for defamatory comments posted by third parties on their Facebook pages.
The court did not rule whether Facebook should also be held liable because the platform has not been sued.
This precedent applies to all administrators of Facebook pages, including the government. The Tasmanian government has blocked comments on its social media sites, and the US news agency CNN has excluded Australians from its Facebook page.
Communications Minister Paul Fletcher said on Wednesday that a national defamation law review may examine whether Facebook is responsible for user posts.
