Australia allows skilled workers and students to enter from December | Business and Economy

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison called the relaxation of borders “an important milestone on our path to return”

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Monday that Australia will allow foreign visa holders to enter the country from early December because Australia will take further steps to restart international travel and support the economy.

Australia closed its international borders in May 2020, allowing only a limited number of citizens and permanent residents to enter in order to curb the spread of COVID-19.

In recent weeks, regulations have been relaxed to allow foreign family members of citizens to enter. Morrison said that the scope will be expanded from December 1 to allow vaccinated students, business visa holders and refugees to enter.

Morrison told reporters in the capital Canberra: “The return of skilled workers and students to Australia is an important milestone in our return.”

He said Australia will also allow vaccinated tourists from South Korea and Japan to enter from December 1.

Education sector

The return of international students, who bring about 35 billion Australian dollars (US$25 billion) to the Australian economy every year, will have a major boost to the education industry.

Many Australian universities began to rely on international students, and the closure of borders resulted in hundreds of layoffs in many higher education institutions.

After the travel bubble between the two countries took effect, a group of international students arrived in Australia from Singapore on Sunday.

Border rules, rapid blockades and strict social distancing rules have helped Australia keep its coronavirus population well below that of many other comparable countries, with approximately 200,000 cases and 1,948 deaths.

Victoria reported most of the new infections, with 1,029 recorded on Monday. 180 cases have been reported in Sydney’s hometown of New South Wales. Other states and territories have no or few cases of the new coronavirus.
