This is a nightmare scenario for gamers, and it happens often. You come back from get off work and prepare to relax. Your roommate, spouse or siblings are occupying your gaming desktop or laptop.Or, in the same stressful situation, someone is going all out Squid game On the monitor or TV you used to shoot the Spartan rookie (or anything else).
If your game is not tied to a specific device, and that device is not connected to a single screen. Alienware thinks it has a solution, but let me first say that it is not a solution you will like soon.
The company announced during the 2022 CES conference that its Concept Nyx is a vision for the future, where a single game streaming server in your home can stream multiple instances from a central game library at the same time. At this stage, all of this is very conceptual, so let me break down some of them for you.
See the huge box above? If you want, it’s a server—a gaming system. In Alienware’s ideal world, it can run four games at the same time and transfer them via wifi to an application that can be accessed on any of your devices, whether it’s a tablet. Computer, mobile phone, desktop, TV or laptop. Then, when your roommate finishes watching the last episode, you can immediately switch from playing on the tablet to playing on the TV.
The goal is to make access to games as easy as streaming movies or TV shows, unless you don’t have to switch between a dozen different services. Alienware said that no matter where you buy the game, this application can host all your games.
The following is Alienware’s vision for Concept Nyx:
“Imagine you are exploring the night city in Cyberpunk 2077 on your bedroom desktop. Your roommate uses a laptop and a tablet in the living room to face off in the Rocket League. And your cousin is over too, she is here. A new world is created in Minecraft on her phone. Now suppose it’s time to prepare dinner, so you go downstairs and give the controller to one of your roommates-you can quickly switch to it on the 65-inch TV in the living room Your CyberPunk 2077 experience, and let them take over from where you left off, cooking and advancing your game.”
You may be wondering how this is different from current cloud gaming solutions, such as Nvidia’s GeForce Now or Google Stadia. The key here is edge computing, so high-performance gaming systems can process everything locally (rather than going to a remote server), thereby achieving lower latency and higher bandwidth.
For gamers, this all sounds like a dream scene, unfortunately, it is now: dream. There are some important technical hurdles to overcome, not to mention potential compatibility issues-oh, there are chip shortages. We witnessed some of these difficulties firsthand in the delay demo of Nyx’s attempt to stream Rocket League and Cyberpunk 2077 At the same time (to be fair, it is not clear what caused the technical failure, although poor quality wifi in these news event venues is usually the culprit).
Like other concepts (Luna, Parry et al) Dell/Alienware revealed this month that Nyx is at an early stage and Alienware has not released any specific content on pricing, upgradeability or specifications. Although we are not sure whether Nyx will enter the market, we can gain some comfort by understanding that large companies are sometimes related to our pain-and occasionally try to do something.
