(Reuters)-On Wednesday morning, two workers were killed in a chemical spill and 30 others were injured. Cleanup is still in progress. Lyondell Basel Industries (NYSE:) Located in Laporte, Texas, the company said.
The incident happened on Tuesday night and the facility’s acetyl unit released approximately 100,000 pounds of a mixture containing acetic acid. Lyondell said in a statement on Wednesday that a “clear all” was issued on Wednesday morning and that air monitoring did not show the level of action that can be taken.
The company said 24 of the 30 people sent to the local hospital have been discharged. The two people who died in the incident were contractors.
Lyondell said that investigations into the cause of the leak are ongoing, and local and federal agencies including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Chemical Safety Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency have all been notified.
