2021 box office closes, bringing more fireworks to “Spider-Man”

New York-When Hollywood closes in 2021, the box office of Spider-Man: Nowhere to Escape has improved, ranking first among all movies for the third consecutive week, and has already been among the best-selling movies of all time. However, even if all the champagnes of “No Way” are eye-opening, the film industry has doubled its gross box office revenue from 2020 after a year, but it is still much better than the year before the pandemic. There are good reasons to be both optimistic and worried, entering the pace of 2022.

Cinemas were mostly closed at the beginning of the year, but ended with Monster Smash. Sony Pictures’ Marvel sequel “No Way Home” earned an estimated $52.7 million at the box office over the weekend, bringing its three-week box office to $609.9 million. This is ranked 10th in North America. Globally, its box office revenue was 1.37 billion U.S. dollars, surpassing “Black Panther” and becoming the world’s 12th highest-grossing movie.

“No Way Home” is Tom Holland’s third independent film as a network vagabond. It greatly promoted the box office recovery that began when American cinemas officially opened a year after COVID-19 closed last spring. Marvel movies dominated the turbulent year, occupying the top four movies in 2021: “No Way To Escape”, “Legend of Shangzhi and the Ten Rings”, “Venom: The Massacre” and “Black Widow”.

According to data from the data company ComScore, the North American box office will reach US$4.5 billion in 2021. This is down about 60% from 2019-long before the era of masked moviegoers, social distancing, and viral variants (such as the current surge in omicron).

Whether these movies will reach the pre-pandemic totals again is uncertain, because since then, the window of exclusive theaters has shrunk, movie studios have tried mixed distribution, and apart from superhero movies, almost no movies will be available. Its trajectory should make it the top animated version of the pandemic.

But after “No Way Home” and “Sing 2,” holiday weekends are not very attractive to moviegoers.

The third installment of Matthew Vaughn’s “Kingsman” series, “The King’s Man,” after its lackluster debut, only earned $4.5 million at the box office in the second week. But this is still enough for third place. The Disney distribution produced by 20th Century Studios has earned US$47.8 million worldwide.

Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” sold $2.1 million in tickets on the fourth weekend. Although it performed well (the movie was down 26% from the previous week), the vacation that was once envisaged for this critically acclaimed musical did not materialize. “West Side Story”‘s domestic box office revenue was disappointing, at 29.6 million U.S. dollars.

After failing to make his debut last week, Warner Bros. “The Matrix Resurrection” plunged 64% in the second weekend at a price of $3.8 million. The film was also broadcast on HBO Max, and the studio has pledged to end this 2021 practice in 2022. The second week of Kurt Warner’s NFL TV series “American Underdog” even made possible the long-awaited restart of the “Matrix”, with Lionsgate’s box office revenue of $4.1 million.

One of the only new releases this week is “Memoria” by Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Tilda Swinton. Its distributor Neon has developed a novel strategy for the release of the art studio. The movie will only be shown in one theater at a time, and there are no plans for streaming or physical distribution in the future. Since its opening at the IFC Center in New York on December 16, “Memoria” started its unrealistic transnational journey for US$52,656.

According to data from Comscore, the estimated ticket sales for theaters in the United States and Canada from Friday to Sunday. The final domestic data will be released on Monday.
